I suppose ...

... I should have known. Saw this amazing exhibitionist bathroom by Suppose Design Office in the latest Vogue Living. Raced to their website and devoured their unique Japanese take on minimalism. Great post idea until Kim informed me she had featured their work last year. I suppose I should have known. Still I had to share this bathroom. OMG! Love. Very scared about using it but love the concept.

Reader request - bathroom inspiration

Tanya owns a home remodeling company, and needs a bit of inspiration for a bathroom project: We want to install a shower in a narrow bathroom with a large south-facing window at the end away from the door. The room is a standard size bathroom that would hold a shower/tub, toilet and sink about 5 x 8 feet I am leaning toward tiling the whole room and sloping the floor toward a drain under the shower. I want some minimalist enclosure ideas which will allow the maximum light from the window to fall into, and through the room when the door is open. Many designs would compromise the window with a clunky shower surround. The main trade off I see is to encourage at least the majority of the shower water to end up in the drain, before coating everything else. Simplicity is a plus. The window will probably be replaced, so it will be able to get wet, (ie, vinyl.) Any thoughts? And pictures?
Here is a photo of the bathroom in it's current state:

YIKES. I'd say it could use a bit of work. :) I personally am a huge fan of seamless floors in a bathroom where, as Tanya is suggesting, water flows into a floor drain. Tanya also sent along a couple photos of bathrooms she found on DTI that lead her to the idea and inspired action.

I found some photos of bathrooms set up like this, as well as some with more separation for the shower, and I tried finding as many examples as I could of these with a window in the shower area. Hopefully these help!

Tiny bathroom design and a contest

A couple of things came through my inbox this week that I wanted to share with you all. First off, some tiny bathroom design help from Irene: "I'm an interior design student that recently discovered your blog and am LOVING IT!!!!! Anyways I was reading your post about the world's smallest bathroom the other day and then it was on my mind all week. I love challenging spaces so i decided to practice sketching and stuff with this space. It was a fun experience and i'd just like to share it with you! Since it was so small i decided to do a minimalist concept while trying to keep the space open. The full length frosted glass windows help bring in alot more natural light and the illusion of space. Also tried to add some storage without obstructing the flow of space. Hope you like it!" First, a reminder of what the bathroom in question looks like:

Irene's plan for this nightmarish bathroom is REALLY smart (and how kind of her!) and I had to share her drawings with you. (Thanks so much Irene! You've got talent so wishing you lots of luck in school!)

I also wanted to mention a huge contest going on at Greentea Design. They recently launched a new blog called The Design Tree and to celebrate they are asking for entrants to write a haiku (a poem that consists of 3 lines: the first line contains 5 syllables, the second line has 7, and the final line has 5 again) or you can simply vote for your favourite haiku, and they are giving away over $10,000 in furniture and cash prizes. !!!!!!!! I'm really stoked about this contest because the kind folks at Greentea have asked me to be one of the judges! So go check out the details here, and in the meantime, here is a peek at the furniture you could win...

World's smallest bathroom

Here is an email we received from a reader named Mari: "I have the world's smallest bathroom. I tried a couple of things, but nothing's seem to work in it. The worst thing it's not its small size, but how the things are put together. I even had an architect to take a look, but there was no way to change the things out of their original place. The bathroom is 83cm x 2.40m. The shower is 80x80cm. I was wondering if you can get me some ideas." I honestly don't know what to say about this because it really is T. I. N. Y. My advice is blow out a wall but I'm guessing that ain't gonna happen. An architect friend of Mari's said that it would be possible to blow out the wall on the left, but when it was time to do it, it was discovered that that was some kind of building regulation against it. So if you guys have any ideas for Mari, fire away! (P.S. I did a "small bathroom" reader request a couple months back but I'm not sure that post would even help in this case).
