Welcome Diane!

Jo and I would like to give a big shout out to Diane, who has kindly joined the DTI team as one of our sponsors. She's an artist, photographer, jewelry maker, and now blogger. We winked her art and we winked her blog in the past. She blogs about anything and everything, from tableware and chocolate to hotels and handbags. So head on over to Diane's blog and say hello! Here is a little peak at some items she has featured recently.

Martin Tessler

Martin Tessler is a photographer based in Vancouver who's photographs are frequently featured among Canada's best shelter magazines (and American ones such as Metropolitan Home). "His interior shots have an immediacy and an intimacy that comes from faultless styling and a mastery of lighting". The photos above? Gorgeous!!! (I want that lamp!)

Black and white debate

Ashley of the blog Free Form emailed with a bedroom decor problem: "I am moving to a new apartment and thought I should really concentrate on decorating my bedroom. I kind of have my room in black and white right now but I didn't do a great job if it. So I am wondering, do you think I should try and revamp the Black and White theme or scratch it for colours?" She posted on her blog some inspiration she found for black and white and also did one with colour. I say if you've got black and white going on and you like it (except the execution of it) then work with what you have. Since I don't know what Ashley's working with, I went through my photo stash and found photos of predominantly black and white bedrooms. I do like the idea of introducing a colour (pale pink, pale blue, acid yellow...), or even just some timber pieces added in to soften the look.

I think my favourite inspiration would have to be Erin of Design for Mankind's bedroom below. The wall colour tones down the harshness of the black and white and is perfect for a bedroom.

Gabellini Sheppard

Clean, spare, sculptural these modern spaces designed by Gabellini Sheppard are more like functional backdrops for the simple beauty contained within whether classic furniture, a crisp bed of linen or in the case of their retail work for the the likes of Jil Sander, a stage for a product. It's a spatial thing but bathed in the simplicity of light and defined by crisp lines. Minimalism at its purist.

Decorating with rock art

Colleen of Milwaukee emailed the other day with her design dilemma: "I'm a long time reader currently moving into my first 1 bedroom apartment. It's the first time I'll be able to decorate just the way I like it. I've been out of college for a year and finally financially able to put a little more quality into my decor. I like a clean, comfy aesthetic, but while I've found a few pieces I am currently purchasing (including this Ikea chaise) I'm struggling to decorate. I'd like to find a way to incorporate both my passions: music & travel. I love photography, especially black and whites, and the majority of the prints I have taken or collected are of concerts, musicians & various places I've traveled. I've looked, but I can't seem to find rooms centered on these ideas for inspiration that aren't strictly 'modern' (which is visually harsh to me). Do you have any suggestions?" Colleen, I think you've got it easier than you think. Black and white photography goes with anything, and I think this is true regardless of the subject. I think a vintage/boho look would be cool with your photography (which I'd love to see by the way), with a couple funky knick knacks/pillows here and there to relate to the photos. A wall painted black with a bunch of your photos framed in black (maybe with white mats) would be fabulous (if you own and can go that drastic). I also like the idea of the photos contrasting with the decor, like hung against a vintage granny floral wallpaper, with a retro leather couch or Victorian style settee below. I collected some photos that might help, and hopefully show you that the sky is the limit...
