Antique portraits in unexpected spaces

The Village

LUZIO

One thing I have loved for as long as I can remember are very old antique portraits in gilded frames used in not-so-traditional spaces. Here are 2 random photos I came across recently where these portraits are hanging in very unexpected spaces, and they look fantastic in both.

These are great. It looks like the lady in the first photo is hanging out in an old fire extinguisher "cupboard."

We've been decorating our master bedroom/bathroom with an Old West theme. Over the past three years, we've purchased oval frames with convex glass. We finally got them all together and we have nine (we were both born under the sign of the pack-rat).

We're going to hang five of them on the wall over the bed: Dave's parents' wedding photo, my parents' wedding photo, his high school senior photo, my high school senior photo (we were high school sweethearts, separated for 45 years), and one of us together at our current age (old).

Not in an unexpected place but they will make us smile every time we go to bed.

I loooooove those oval/convex frames! That's going to look fantastic (and it's so sweet)!

The first portrait is hanging in a "podezd'" (entrance foyer) of a pre-revolutionary apartment block in Moscow....

Thanks, Joshua!

What was the original purpose of the little cupboard? All I could think of was a fire extinguisher...maybe some sort of communication device?
