Some dark
And now for the dark. If you enjoyed seeing photos of the progress going on at Jo's place, I think you'll appreciate this post. It's a home bathed in black (mostly). It's moody, modern and gives off a completely different vibe than my post earlier today. Which would you prefer?

i want the desk chair!! have been looking for something similar for months... any idea where it is from?
I have a black bathroom, but that's where it ends. I want that kitchen counter/backsplash though!
As much as I like what Jo has done with her home (it suits her), I am a light and sun person so I need light in my home. I prefer white walls and a contrast between white furniture (sofas and chairs) and dark (some tables). Limited color can be added in textiles. But maybe that can also be applied to a black background.
To each his own, but I find these images of black-painted brick and black cabinets too moody and I would want to sleep and eat all the time, not to mention have all the lights on all hours of the day.
Kim, I think you crave the sun, as I do, and would prefer lighter spaces.
I would not go as dark as most of the examples shown, but I do find the dark spaces more interesting. They all seem to have large windows and natural light. I don't think I would want black painted walls but GOOD GOD am I sick of seeing all the Scandy white on white rooms that interior designers have been showing for the last several years (design*sponge, I'm looking at you LOL). A turquoise pillow is not enough relief from all the white, and if you have pets, eat food, or like to wear shoes, it just isn't practical. White on white has lost it's charm for me due to massive overexposure!
There is not only the question of light or dark, it is also about one home being feminine and the other masculine in my opinion
Photos 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7 have natural light and still look dark and dingy on the inside of these homes. Christa brings the natural light point up. So even if you are lucky enough to have all the tall windows, your home would still be dark with the darker painted walls, floors and furnishings. I think contrast is necessary for interest.
My condo had green/gray on two walls and even with a southeast exposure, the rooms were always somewhat dark and appeared and felt smaller. I painted the living area all white and it is a great backdrop for art and it is light the entire day and part of the night. Warm wood floors (I have hickory) compliment white walls nicely.
I would much prefer the light! A little black accenting is ok and can give a dramatic, romantic affect if done right. Too much though is just downright depressing!
JUST SICK! ----- In a VERY VERY good way!
This is a beautiful space. There's nothing contrived about it yet it is about more than mood or function. I liked both spaces today,
but this one would be my personal pick. I can live with lots of black.
Seriously dramatic!
i'd take the dark any day!!
The color palette is exactly like my house! Crazy! love it.
What bullshit baggage people are toting around!"I must have light" "Too dark" "I LIKE white" "I hate white" "Ineed white" "TOO much white"Without the occasional deviation there would be no progress, no evolution! bravo for having th balls to push our likes/dislikes farther out. Bravo for showing us something no one else had the chuptza to offer. The materials are wonderful, the manipulation of space is masterful. The drama is dramatic without being over bearing and I think the whole thing is to be applauded.
I want that desk chair too! Where can I buy it?
In response to questions:
Desk chair is unmarked; acquired late seventies Paris.
Kitchen top and splash are each made from a single plank of ash (80cm wide is sadly rare), manually scorched and oiled.
I would absolutly prefer this darkness before the lightness, Very sexy!
