Steendyk

Steendyk is a Brisbane based design studio that brings a sculptural quality to their work. The practice is passionate about sustainability but also about exploring the beauty of a space. Elegant solutions to subtropical design problems. The first home is an inner city timber cottage that explores the past and contrasts it with the needs of the future. Indoor and outdoor boundaries are blurred. The second house also explores the concepts of in and out along with shadow and light, screen and privacy, penetration and passive solar orientation at the same time embracing Steendyk's love of the sculptural.

Great to see Brisbane based firms featuring internationally and deservedly so.

I'm a big fan of Steendyk's work. I especially like the round stools he produces and he's based in Brisbane!!

This is great. Thank you for this!

i really think it's time for me to move to australia. the only time the boundaries between inside and outside are blurred in western canada is if you have a leaky door and you get snow in your hallway. love both houses and will happily live in the closet of either!

j'aime beaucoup. Merci

I contracted Steendyyk Studio to complete some residential design work a few years ago after the principal designer came highly recommended. I was very disappointed with the final result. The rooms are aesthetically pleasing to the eye, however are not very practical. The bathroom finishes are poor quality and not well positiioned. I am unable to brush my teeth in the basin without hitting my head on the mirror.

Steendyyk also design interiors including furniture, lamps and rugs.

The designs are unique but the products are overpriced. Rather shop at IKEA.

I was in Melbourne earlier this year and I was fortunate to attend a presentation by Brian Steendyyk.

His designs are simple but stylish. It is difficult to find anything in Australia that compares unless you travel to Europe.

He comes across as a great self promoter. Exposure and publicity are important for any talented young designer.

Nice clean lines and the merging of indoor and outdoor is interesting. However, not sure if this would be practical for anyone with young children.

I would like to know where to buy the stool.

I saw something similar at Kmart recently but unsure if it is by the same designer.

What is original about this again? Is this the 'best' of Brisbane or Austrialia? Polished concrete floors are great if you have pets though.

Looks great but hard to imagine anyone living in this kind of space. Too neat for me!

I thought I should just jump in and let some of our commenters know that even though you do not leave an email or a website when you comment, we (Kim and I that is) can see that your comments are coming from the same IP address. That's one of the back of house functions that we like about Squarespace our blogging platform. I can tell that Patrick Black and Kylie H used the same computer to make their comments and that Miss B, Rack Daddy, Jason, Athena S and Roderick Alvaraz have the same IP address for the 5 of them. Perhaps to save further commenters the embarrassment of being outed as the same person or a "group of friends" who share one computer perhaps they should desist or at last take the time to find a different computer(s) to use. Makes it more believable :)

Very clever indeed. I can speak for Kylie and myself, we are friends and indeed used the same computer to log our comments. Can't speak for the legitimacy of the others.

That's why I didn't delete the comments Patrick. People have the right to say what they want and especially about their own experiences. Just wanted people to know what we know.

Team,

The comment I posted is accurate and a true account of my experience. I am a fellow designer and admirer. The same for partner Athena.

Feel free to delete the comments logged for 'Jason', 'Rack Daddy' and 'Miss B'. While my junior staff have argued that they are legitimate remarks, I don't feel they are in the right spirit of things.

We are essentially competitors, however this is not considered appropriate.

Hope this clears things up.

We are fans of the site and do not wish to be banned!

The first house is pretty ugly from the back view. Not keen on corrugated iron.

I would be interested to know if that rusty looking screen on the second house is a permanent fixture or can be moved in order to see out the windows.

Love the selective editing of commentary on this site.

Anonymous the comments removed were rude and derogatory (knob was one word used and although those who commented have a right to dislike the work they do not have the right to use inappropriate and unprofessional language) but more importantly the negative comments removed came from the same IP address and hence the same person or group of people banging their own drum. It will be interesting to see if any more derogatory comments turn up using your IP address seeing you are the one who noticed they were gone. I will keep an eye out for comments coming from your IP address of 203.45.161.65 which appears to be a Brisbane IP address .... JO

Question....What is rude or derogatory about the use of the word 'knob'? Furthermore, is this not Brisbane based?

I guess freedom of speech is not considered appropriate either? I notice from the thread above that "People have a right to say what they want".......obviously not the case.

Perhaps you should consider editing the language so as not to offend the sensitive reader.

Emma, where we are based has zero relevance, and calling people names, like knob, is not permitted here.
