G. P. Schafer Architect

"The things one loves about old houses - their sense of history, their time-worn easy comfort, the way they sit on the land with an air of inevitability, their elegant proportions and details - can still be had in a new house today, and they are at the heart of the work we do. Through a dynamic combination of discernment, taste, imagination and rigor, we strive to create new places for our clients to live and enjoy life. These places are rooted in tradition but also keenly attuned to the demands and opportunities of life today. They celebrate craftsmanship and quality, comfort and decoration, natural light and the importance of connecting the rooms inside with the landscapes which surround them. At the end of the day, our goal is to make places that are beautiful, comfortable, of exceptional quality, and seem as if they have always been there."

The first two hallways do it for me!

So much to love - but the long glass-roofed hall has at least five ideas I would love to use! What a brilliant way to use what could be just a mean, skinny corridor.

These images are gorgeous, and they do indeed feel as though they have always been there. Such character and charm in every photo...

Mr Schafer's Greek revival country house pushes all of my buttons. He gave Norm a video tour of it on This Old House. Thanks so much for showcasing his work.

I have to agree, its not easy to pick a favourite, all so impressive. I'm hooked on kitchens at the moment so plenty perfect inspirations! Thanks a lot!

Thanks for posting these images, they were good timing for me.
Can we talk about the hallway with the paint outline? What's that about? I think I like it, but don't know why...?

I love the use of brick in the entry. I've been dreaming of doing this, and now I just have to.

Oh gosh. This is the most amazing collection of architecture I've ever seen. Usually I like 40%-70% of what an architect does, but I. Love. It all.

I love that first kitchen so very much. I officially need a shabby chic Bed & Breakfast sign! And maybe a new kitchen...

As a lover of old houses, I found these images stunning. I love how the architects have kept bits of the old houses- so beautiful. We live in an old (200 years) house that we are renting, and I dream of all the wonderful things that could be done to it...

I'm gonna kill myself. One day I will end up homeless and this is not helping. It is soooo beautiful. <3 One can only dream...
