Perhaps a new Sunday feature
Sun, 3 Oct 2010Over the last couple days I was agonizing once again over what the heck I was going to do for today's Flickr Finds post. I was SO running out of ideas for those posts and these days I am finding that alot of photos on FLickr that I'd LOVE to use are download-disabled. I thought about instead doing a "weekly recap" - showcasing all of my favourite photos from the posts we had done the week prior. I'll give it a try this week and see how it goes (click on the photo to go to the post it was featured in).

Oh I have that problem as well, there are so many beautiful pictures that you wish to share but you can't download them... I like the new idea though!

great idea. much better than pets on furniture, which i tend to skip entirely. otherwise, love your blog and am constantly inspired, as per your title.
I'm new here (just found your blog a couple weeks ago), but already I love this new idea. I like being able to run down the photos and remember having seen them in previous posts.
If you're interested in suggestions that could build on this idea, I found myself interested to know why you selected the photos you did. Adding a line or two beneath each photo about why you love it would be really interesting to me.
I am loving this site, by the way! Constantly inspiring me with beautiful things. xoxo

i especially like the room with yellowish/avocado colored walls. also the pic below, bedroom w/ grey walls and touches of black.
Personally, I love recaps because I almost always find something I've somehow 'missed' during the week, whatever I blog I'm reading.
On a side note, have you thought of approaching a Flickr user to ask for special permission to reuse their photo if you find one that isn't sharing abled? Just a thought!
Evita, I have hardly any time to get my Sunday posts done so there is absolutely no way I'd be able to find time to email Flickr users to ask to use their photos and wait for responses. Unfortunately.
I LOVE pets on furniture. Flickr finds are always hit or miss, of course, but recaps sound like fun. On the other hand, why don't you just take Sundays off? Posting 6 days a week seems more than fair!
Or maybe once a week, instead of Flickr finds, you can have a "best of blogs" recap, where you post your fave pics you found on other decor blogs (assuming you read any!). As long as you source them, I think this would be a great idea, because my Google Reader got too overwhelmed with too many decor blogs to keep up with, so now I tend to just read yours alone. If you could highlight the "best of" photos from the others, you'd literally be bumped up to "perfect blog" status, instead of merely "favorite blog" status!
Kim, I love the flickr finds and have always been amazed that you kept coming up with new ideas. I've been increasingly frustrated with flickr. I haven't been able to download or upload pics lately, and I miss it! This is a great new idea, recapping the week. And I was so glad that you did, because I missed Paul and Elsa's beautiful home from Singapore! Lovely. Thanks for your hard work.
i love this idea! i'm sure it's difficult so find new things but this is a good way to start/end the week.
I was wondering how you kept those flickr ideas coming! I was often impressed- probably one of my favorite features!
Although, I have to admit- I like a recap idea, too. I'm on a weekly email list from Houzz and it's such a time saver for me! So I'd love to come here and see recaps. But I would miss flickr posts dearly!

For my part, I read your blog every day. When I miss doing so, I make it a point to go see the posts I have missed. In my opinion, it is redundant to repeat. As for Flickr, I am happy to see I am not the only one frustrated by the changes. Since I am here, I must tell you I always skip pets on furniture... My personal choice would be to just keep a day off...
I agree with Loulou. If I miss a day, I always scroll back to see what I missed. I see no point in posting the same photos twice; it makes it that much harder for me to see everything. You have a lot of content on here, so anything that makes it that harder to go through would ideally be avoided.
If Flickr Finds is too difficult and takes too much time (I imagine it must!), then I would like to see designer/photographer photos or nothing at all.
Pets on furniture? For a long time, I skipped over it. Now I look at them because my dog and my cat recently died. I expect that once I adopt new ones, I'll go back to skipping the posts. It's nice to see the homes of readers, though, without having to showcase an entire house. I suppose my end opinion is I could take it or leave it. I can see why you want to do it, because the content is sent to you, but I enjoy the days with posts of well-designed interiors the best.
I read Pets on Furniture because the animals are way more aesthetic than a chair could ever be! They are sweet and adorable, and your readers are often great photographers. Some of my favorite vignettes have actually come from readers' homes submitted in these photos. I save the ones I like, just as if it were any other featured picture. Please keep that feature!
Like I said, taking a day off might prevent blogging-burnout at least! But I don't know if your advertising is dependent upon 7-day posting (which reminds me: readers, show your support by clicking the ad banners! Kim and Jo can't say so outright, but I'm pretty sure I can!). :)
By the way, this is the first time I think I've ever posted, though I've been reading you since you were at the old site. Desire to Inspire is my favorite.
Kim, I have a solution! Because you're working on the web, you can simply do a screenshot of the image you like on flickr. Those non-downloadables are to prevent hi-resolution versions (300 dpi, etc) from being used in print. However, a screenshot will give you the 75 dpi you need.
Please, please don't change pets on furniture. I do enjoy the rest of the week's posts, but Mondays are a special treat and a great change in pace.

I was thinking the same thing, kbd, but I figured that if a user disabled downloading, they want their ownership of the image protected, period. It seems disrespectful to "get around it" for public use, although I've done that for personal use on many websites that disable right-clicking.
On the other hand, Kim, I know you probably don't want to ruin the format of the blog since it has a nice look, but I wouldn't be averse to simply clicking through links to any Flickr image you fancy.
Kim In Jersey, you're right! I had not thought of that... but does Kim have links to their images on flickr? Does that not just count as free publicity? Because if someone sees the image on this blog, or on flickr, but can't download it on either, isn't that the same thing? (because if they copy from this blog, it will also be low resolution)...

It's funny that we are having a Pets on Furniture debate because I was just thinking the other day that one of the things I like the most about this blog is PoF. PoF is a little like walking down the streets of your city in the evening when people haven't drawn the curtains - it's a chance to check out the decor of other 'regular' people (not just the designers who are usually featured in design magazines). I am constantly delighted with what D2I posters are able to pull off in their homes - there are some pretty stylin' people who post on this blog! I confess that when it comes to fashion I tend to be more influenced by the fab people around me than what I see in Vogue, and I feel the same way about design. So, KIm, as far as I am concerned, keep bringing the pets on!
Oh yes - and as to the weekly round up , I liked it a lot. I try to visit everyday, but I have the usual job/family mania and I don't get to check it out as often as I would like. So, it totally works for me. I too do try to catch up on what I missed, but....Anway I would go along with the majority. PS - love that green /yellow room, I have used that colour paint in my house and I LOVE it! I would have missed that in the original posting too.....
Not sure how this got into a conversation about my pets on furniture posts but as I've said before, those posts will disappear the day I stop getting submissions. I never said I was getting rid of those so chill PoF lovers!
I appreciate everyone's thoughts about Sunday's posts. I will not be posting photos from Flickr if the save functionality is not there. I consider that stealing. Even if I do link back to the photo. Since I'm getting mixed reviews about the "sunday summary" post I am really at a loss as to what to do. I guess this coming Sunday will be a mystery. :)
