Wed, 10 Jun 2009For as long as I can remember I've always dreamed about converting a building, such as a barn, a mechanics shop, a church, into a home. Well, some folks in the UK have converted done just that. They purchased a church for £92,000, spent £300,000 in renovations, and it's now worth about £650,000. I'm not sure that I could live in a home surrounded by gravestones though....EEEKKK!! Would you want to live here?
I am so disappointed with the decor. So much to work with...those blue sofas gotta go. I think the hole thing is just way too church-y. Photos found here.

The whole stained glass window in the bedroom thing is just a tad vampiric. The project is one of those things that is cool in theory...
I feel that parts of the home are beautiful, and I would enjoy being in such a space, but others are, like you mentioned, perhaps a bit too church-y. As a Christian, I'm not sure how I would feel living in a church. One one hand, a great connection, on the other, perhaps a bit odd. The vastness is beautiful, no doubt, but some of the furnishings are not as well suited as they could have been, I believe. Beautiful structure, though, I must say~
I think it's very cool! Lots of light and the stained glass gives it a lot of decoration on its own...I'm not a huge fan of the outside, but there's not a lot they can do about that. I agree that I really dislike the couches and some of the bed linens are really not attractive, but I like most of the all-wood furniture and think it's pretty cool in general. I don't think that things always have to be super-modern and over-designed. The bathtub looks very happy where it is, and the kitchen is pretty sweet. =)
I get the sense that the owners spent money renovating the space instead of blowing their budget on decor & furniture. The furnishings don't look brand new, so either they decorated with what they had (which I honestly like the idea of)--or they went with a modest country aesthetic to downplay the vastness of the space.
it just looks like to me that after the epocalypse they threw all their crappy shit inside the last available building...a church.
Hi Kim! Oh, what fun I would have had if I had been the one that bought that church!! I agree that the decor is disappointing, but the bones are fabulous - I love the landing with the whitewashed walls and that window - and I actually love the stained glass in the bathroom and the kitchen - my mind is just racing with possibilities for that house... I'm going to have my husband photoshop out all the furniture and we should have a game of redecorating it!! haha

I agree it needs a little decor help. And I would feel a little weird having my bed at the front of the sanctuary????
I think the idea is cool, but they definitely let me down with all of the decor. Every room just looks like a waiting area or a lobby. It could be so much cooler! But, how how you feel doing all the things you do in the bedroom with those stained glass saints right behind you? I would be a bit freaked out. I personally wish the whole aesthetic was darker and more cozy.
This is a great idea...I think I would be more comfortable in a barn than a church renovated...though. I agree with the comment above me, the decor could be changed a little. Needs more ummphhh...My favorite is the white window ..i think its real clean and beautiful.
Welcome to your typical English home. The only thing missing is the wallpaper border half way up the wall. It's like they've transplanted their suburban digs into a magnificent old building.
I prefer to think that they are broke from what must have been a massive job restoring this building and now they are taking their time to fill it with new pieces. I love the bath. And those old school chairs around the table are cool too.
I'd have big problems living in a church; I would feel that I was committing a blasphemy on a daily (and nightly) basis - and I consider myself an atheist. I'd also feel that it was a bit disrespectful towards the people who built and used the church in earlier times.
The décor may be a bit un-cool, but at least they've worked from the colours of the windows and the rest of the church's interior. Wonder how they clean the windows by the stove though. There's no fan so the windows are bound to become greasy after some time.
To sum it all up: Strange.
The churchiness is a bit alarming - I can just about deal with the living room but the master bedroom feels like sacrilege!

there are some really good church conversion out there but this isn't one of them. it's a little churchy creepy!
Doesn't it feel a little bit spooky in the night, especially the bed placed like that. Otherwise it is a cool idea, but I think I'll jump.

Absolutely beautiful! I think they did a great job, love the text border around the main room. Have always dreamt of living in an old church, there is nothing like a home with history!
I agree with you Kim. Why spend all that monet upgrading and renovating for such a blah decor. Very anticlimactic.
The decor definitely needs work, but I would love to live there.

Absolutely Horrid!!!! The decor is deadful er-hum, I mean dreadful. Hey, you know what? The windows would look great---IN A CHURCH!!!
I guess you gotta go with one thing or another..
Like go medieval kind of design with it or go really modern inside to contrast with the church features.
I also love this concept, but its a bit too open concept and the decor isn't great. The long narrow front hall is great though, and I don't mind the upstairs loft/bedroom.
UGH. All of the furniture needs to go. Nice idea in theory, terrible execution.
