The good, the bad and the what were they thinking

Studying hard Kim? Thought I'd cheer you up with a retro post. Haven't dragged out a retro design book for some time now. The title says it all. Enjoy! (Scanned from The Practical Encyclopedia of Good Decorating and Home Improvement, Meredith Corporation, New York, 1971.)

that should be the title of my high school yearbook.

I've missed these retro posts. More!

what a nice idea- retro-fresh i might say...and by the way, is the "what were they thinking" talking about the all-red (or pink) one in the middle? my eyes are just a bit sore by looking at that:)

Oh my goodness, I'm old enough to admit I lived in one of those spaces - of the "what were they thinking?" variety! Thanks for the visit :)

a lot of bad and very little good. but some for sure. the pink bedroom though...holy horrible. that should be a room where they take people for interrogation. there were 2 or 3 maybe that were completely relevant today, had the photography been a bit better.

such a cute post !!!
ha ha ha ah !!

"Hollywood Regency" will look this bad in no time flat.

Sadly, others may be saying the same about us in 30 years - ie. what were they thinking.

22 Mar 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKim

Haha, to Raina's comment! I agree.

I can easily imagine the living room with the black and white striped wall in a magazine today, it looks very now to me. That said, I don't like it.

Also, I like the little round dining nook, but all that flea market stuff on the walls looks so junky! A small curved wall must be difficult to work with, but hanging a zillion old scoops and rolling pins isn't the solution! Maybe a fabric panel or tapestry? Or leave the wall blank and get a killer light fixture.

And the pink room? Ack!

WOW - that was SO painful!

I think my favorite part about all of these is the lovely technicolor look to all of it...

That was fun. I love love love the retro books. It reminds me of my living room growing up :)
