Reader's home

Hi Jo!

Just a fan letter from Seattle! I'm finally settled into a family remodel/rebuild two years in the making and DTI was my partner every step of the way. I read through the entire archive and clipped I can't even count how many images for my contractor.

We're happy as can be here and this week's theme reminded me that I hadn't sent "after" pictures with a proper thank-you to you and Kim for all your hard work with the site.

It's wonderful!

Thanks,

Annie in Seattle

Hi Annie!

Not talking to you. Insanely jealous. Fabulous house, fabulous propaganda poster collection, fabulous view. Want to say thank you for sharing but I'm still speechless from your photos. DTI helped do this? Blushing but still not talking to you because I am so jealous :)

Your house is wonderful!

Thanks

Jo in Brisbane

I spent 10 years in Seattle. And can I say, that is the luckiest baby ever. It won't have any friends nearby, but still... straight up 1st Avenue is a gold standard bookstore and a big talking monkfish at the Market, to the right and up animatronic dinosaurs and a kids' museum, to the left and down a carousel and an aquarium. The city *smells* good, and the downtown bus is free. The train station is nearby, and it competes with the ferry bell. So what if you can't tell where the sun is 30 days out of 40 -- it's Seattle!

Although the condo seems a little starkly adult, for kid-raising. Even for a metro kid. But very classy. Very, very classy.

HEllo, I am always amazed by homes with such a consistent decor throughout. Maybe a bit serious for my taste, but looks exquisite. And the view and the terrace! I am envy!!

Isn't this amazing? And I actually don't find this too stark for children. There are plenty of pops of color, and look at all those toys in the lounge! There is so much space to run around and when those colorful playthings come out it probably won't even look messy :-)
The kitchen is very monotone for the photo but I am willing to bet there are usually photos on the fridge and toys on the counter. This looks to me like a wonderful family home that adults can feel good about too. Very jealous!

I actually think minimalist homes like this must be very kid friendly--lots of space to run around, no doo-hickies and bric-a-brac to worry about breaking or them getting into.

I agree with Sophie: this is fun, not stark. Not to mention ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS, inside and out.

Ha, ha...Jo, you are too funny. This was a surprise! Thanks for the kind comments. It's important to know that a) it's never this clean--EVER!, b) we moved the plastic slide, the beanbags, and guinea pig cages to take a picture (there are three), c) there are three children but I didn't want to clog up Jo's email with more bedroom pictures since I was already sending such a huge email.

One thing for parents: that glass box on the upstairs level has a sliding door that locks. It's at the top of the stairs and it's wonderful to be able to close off the stairs and let the wild rumpas begin.

Also, if you look closely, you can see a cat on a chair picture. Marshmallow is in a chair under the black table next to the glass cube.

Once again, many thanks to Kim and Jo for such a wonderful site! I wasn't kidding when I said that I poured over DTI for weeks and weeks looking for ideas. I also found the comments so helpful and you guys often pointed out things that a novice non-professional like me would not have noticed. Thank you again for all the hard work with the site.

fantasticly simple + complex. not sure i'm all that into the communist decor - but it fits seattle! and the
sink/shower right in the bdrm? feels a little hotelish to me... the details in there are dynamite though.
love the ebonized stair treads - black + white is nicely used and graphic.

Hi Annie! Your home is impressive. What I like the most is your poster collection, I'd say it's a very bold and brave statement.I'm very curious about your floors, I've tried guessing what they are but aren't sure.Concrete, epoxy? Again, impressive.

wow, impressive reno.

I wanna cry.

@ Natalia...The floors, sigh. It was pretty much a nightmare. We pulled up laminate wood floors to find concrete slab, which we expected, except it was dramatically sloped and had huge patches of repair work, which we did not expect. I had wanted to just sandblast it and leave it raw but the sloping was so extreme that it wasn't possible. We poured a self-leveling "concrete" to help level things out, then put a very thin "microfiber" overlay over the top. To finish it off, we put over ten coats of wax to make it shiny. I think we got the very best install possible with the microfiber but I can't say that it's been the best choice for us. It's good with scraping, wheels, and tough with things pressing down, like high heels. However, it's prone to chipping when something falls at an angle, like a glass from your hand that tumbles down. When it chips, it's pretty much impossible to repair. I have found a grey nail polish that matches somewhat but it's a short term fix.
Hope that helps! PS If I had to do it again, I would use black wood for the floors.
@ Graft...LOL! You nailed it! The People's Republic of Seattle!

I see the babies room was inspired by Jenna Lyon, maybe? Love your home!

Wow, love it. Am also insanely jealous, but in a friendly way. Great job!

15 Oct 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNina

@ Tyler...absolutely!!!!! When I saw those pictures of Lyon's place, I wanted to move right in. I love her place...see how our master bedroom is that dark grey color? That was also from her place. She used chalkboard paint, which I don't like, so I used Iron Mountain by B Moore.

This is a total STUNNER!!!! Very serene and calming..although I'm sure with 3 little ones running around it doesn't stay that way for long ;-)

Enjoy your abode it's a beauty!!!!

What a fantastic space! I too am jealous! Especially of the size of that balcony! And the view! I love the kitchen and the fact that the shower is open to the bedroom (in what looks like the master bedroom). :)

Insanely jealous isn't strong enough! I hear it rains a lot in Seattle, but who cares when you live in a space as incredible as this one. A home like this screams for a party. Entertaining must be a blast here. ENJOY!

i'm jealous too. although I'm a fan of colours, the layout of the house, design and the space and the view... something I can never get in Singapore.
