White floors

Lately I have been dreaming about white painted wood floors and pink walls....not necessarily in the same space but those are things I do not have in my current home that I've been craving. Due to this craving, I got a bit of a fix (although I think I also made it worse) by posting about pink walls. So I thought I'd also post about white floors. I just love the brightness of the rooms and how the furniture pops. Perhaps I'm influenced by people like Jessie who go and buy white hardwood for their entire house. And while I'm pondering white floors, are they as much of a nightmare to keep clean as dark floors? (Because when you live with 5 cats, Swiffer becomes your best friend).

I have been fantasizing about white floors for a long time. I love how the furniture seems to float on them. Like living on a cloud!

I want to paint my wood floors white, but I live in a rental! And I imagine any floor is a pain in the rump when you have five cats! :-) They are a labor of love though.

We have just moved into a rental with white hardwood floors in all living areas and white cushion floor in bathrooms and kitchens. I had only briefly wondered about practicality when we viewed the place but now that we have been here two months it is without doubt not a choice I would make. It looks beautiful immediately after mopping but every little crumb and hair and wet paw print and shoe print shows so if you are particular about appearance it would be one to avoid. Having a black cat probably doesn't help ;) I should think that maybe painted floorboards would have a rougher finish so perhaps would be more forgiving.

Brenda - my gosh, white cushion floors in the bathroom and kitchen? I can only imagine such luxury. Do you have a flickr set where we could see more of your floors?

I have an old house with painted floors, some white, some black and after a fit of spring fever in January, one permanent green with lime stripes(I'm the one who commented on green room lust). After painting the white floor green, I miss it very much. I think white floors are fine to take care of upstairs and love the one in my studio, but either you can't have them in main areas(like an entry, kitchen, etc...) so a bedroom is great, or you can't care about a little dirt and wear. The studio has paint splotches and coffee splashes, and I mop when it gets too dingy, but its still a very light room all the time. The black floor doesn't show much, but it draws all the light in that room, and dirt is dirt anyway. Painted floors are mop-able, while my elderly cat ruined all the rugs with hairballs and long fur and clawing. Anyone ever tried a blue floor? Thinking about a bathroom...

Thanks for the insight into white floors folks....you've got me thinking about whether it would be worth it. We recently put white tile in our front entrance and 2 bathrooms and I'm noticing how much dirt shows on them. But I love the tile so much I decided I don't care and figure it's worth the extra cleaning time. Maybe that's how I'd feel about white painted floors. Blue in a bathroom would be PRETTY. I'm thinking light blue...

I'd love a good white floor, but lacquered so it's shiny like this last photo from Haverland.

If only I could convince my husband that he'd love the same, we'd be in business! :)

Thanks for the inspiration; you never fail me!

I had white-painted hardwood floors in my room in the house I lived in last school year. They were beautiful, but required major maintenance to stay beautiful. It's amazing how much mud and dirt one person can track in daily...makes you wonder if your regular floors are actually clean...

After I got my cat, the fur was very visible, too.

I, too, have been fantasizing about painted wood floors, particularly white!! Ever since I went to Denmark in August, they're everywhere, of course. What I also observed was a very light gray color on the floors with white walls. That looked stunning, in fact, that's the finish in Atelier September. I'm not sure if they have white walls, though, but you have a good shot of their floors somewhere.

The white wood floors in Denmark are mostly very old with layers of paint on them and chips here and there. To me, it's a great look, and you have to embrace the imperfection of it, that's the secret.

Thank you! You just reminded me of something, I can't believe it. My husband and I talked about getting a guest room readied for Thanksgiving guests. A while ago, we talked about painting the floors because the rug has to come up. We just talked about redoing the floors tonight, and totally forgot about painting them! That's now back on the agenda! Thanks!!

Glad I could help Susan! And I LOVE the idea of very light grey floors. Perhaps it would show less dirt too.

i painted my floors white and love it. the remarks about dirt are only true if you wear shoes inside the house. i don't (and don't allow guests to do this either). I feel my floors are very clean as a results and LOVE the way that they bounce light from the windows into the space and up to the 20' ceilings.

I love my white floors. They are messy. Also, we are still working on the house though, and people are wearing shoes in it. Once I clean the floors.......NO MORE SHOES!!! :) I love white,....so I will have white floors, even if it means I have to drive myself a little crazy trying to keep it clean. Its interior design, I do what looks good. ;) (plus, you can lay down rugs)

I especially like the hardwood floors painted in white. It's really fresh and I don't know why but the word "sexy" comes to mind... ;D

I have white tile floors throughout my entire 1st floor. I thought I was going to die mopping all the time. THEN I was given the BEST gift I have ever had. It's a floor cleaner. It vacuums, mops, scrubs AND dries your floor all at the SAME TIME. It takes me all of 30 minutes to do 4 large floors! They range from expensive and fancy to cheap and still wonderful.

We just bought a new duplex house and had the whole bottom floor from front to back done with white resin floors. Unfortunately the company that did it messed it up & it started lifting, but it's still an amazing floor even though we need to have it redone. Unfortunately due to the bad experience my wife is thinking of getting wooden floors instead :( We're in debate now :)
But check this link for the product we used...it's AMAZING and not more expensive than wood or tiles. Just make sure that the company you use KNOW what they are doing.

I've been wanting to paint my floor white so I took it as a sign when I stumbled onto this site. Mind you I took the lazy route (and I don't recommend others do this). My floor was brown polished concrete so
1) I wiped it down with soapy water made from diluting Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castille Soap
2) Dried it
3) 4 of us did the edges and corners with brushes and 1 person rolled using the Freshaire no-VOC semi-gloss white base (for walls). The whole thing required 3 coats; the 3rd coat was done 24 hours after the 2nd coat dried.

In case you missed it, I didn't sand and I didn't use concrete paint, but we don't wear shoes in the house so we'll see what the maintenance will be like. In any case, it currently looks amazing and made my dark loft light and airy.

What a helpful blog. We are redoing a flat and have a concrete floor at the moment. We would like to have white floor boards, either limed or painted, but my question is, can one use floating floors for this purpose? Can one get floating floors that aren't finished? Thanks. By the way, we live in Australia.
