First stalking of the year and I'm excited. (Beats chest. Bellows loudly. Frightens neighbour's children.) I'm in Rozelle, Sydney and but it's not just one home I'm stalking. It's two. Two houses, same suburb, same street, separated by scant meters. I'm partial to both, can't afford either but my love affair with small heritage cottages with architect extensions continues. I spent Friday daydreaming of a hotel in Paris. Today I've run away to Greece, to the island of Mykonos, to a beach club and restaurant that takes my breath away. Simplicity and beauty and luxury. A truly stunning location and a truly stunning complex. Scorpios Mykonos.
The historic sandstone cottage in Sydney's Balmain had undergone many changes to its fabric over the years. Let's just say that they weren't all sympathetic. Carter Williamson Architects' renovation has seen the exterior revitalised while the interior has been renewed whilst respecting the narrative of the old home. Walls slide and disappear, old and new are juxtaposed and the choice of materials lets the richness of the original cottage walls become the decoration in this modest, yet spacious and flexible home.
Imagine an old tumble-down stone barn near Todi in Umbria, Italy. Imagine it fully rebuilt, stylishly furnished and waiting for you to come visit. Two suites, "Love" and "Passion", private garden, pool, olive grove, slow tourism. Locanda di Doris is the beautiful B&B created by Doris Sochaczewski and Valentino Fialdini. She’s Brazilian with European soul and he’s half Italian half Brazilian. Both are artists, stylists, food and wine lovers and trend watchers. No wonder the inn is so fabulous. I'm ready to book my flight. Trouble is I don't think I'd want to leave.
