Double dose of Inside Out

Here's our second home from the July issue of Inside Out. I'll let managing editor Lee Tran Lam fill us in.

This second batch of images are from a "renovator's delight" (and as we all know, the reality of such a huge project is not always entirely "delightful")! A group of friends (who call themselves "A Gentleman's Agreement") decided to buy a dilapidated house (and its bad shape was not exaggerated – most of the floor had rotted through, there was water damage wherever you looked, and the stairs had vanished – as had many of the walls. There wasn't even a proper kitchen or bathroom). "We couldn't have lived there even if we wanted to," says builder Daniel Hedge. 

With some styling help from the Cool Edies duo, the group renovated the home and try to sell it. It's quite a task! Unsurprisingly, they have some insightful stories to tell.  Styling by Jane Frosh. Photography by Phu Tang.

Haptic Architects

London and Oslo based Haptic Architects have reached into the unused loft above this top floor Olso apartment to create a light filled home. Vertical lines heighten the space while positive and negative space define the areas in otherwise open plan living. File away the staircase in your inspiration folders. Yes I know not to code in many countries but a work of art, a domestic sculpture. Inspiration doesn't always have to be practical. A dream, a fleeting thought. A joy. Like the fireplace in the kitchen. The true hearth in the home.

The staircase

Returning from Brazil in the late 19th century Portuguese migrants brought not only new wealth but architectural influences from their adopted country. Who would have known that a chi chi alpine chalet design would have been popular in Brazil at the time? Fast forward to the 21st century and the"Chalé das Três Esquinas" (Three Cusps Chalet) in Braga, Portugal was in desperate need of repair. Tiago do Vale Arquitectos have breathed new life into the crumbling building with a lightness, a transparency that is defined by the sinuous original staircase that rises through the newly opened spaces. A modern work and live space in a reborn historic building.
