Stalking on a Saturday

With its back wall dating from 1850 and a heritage-listed frangipani tree we barely glimpse, this brand new industrial-inspired residence is rooted in the past (sorry for the pun) but definitely future focused. Recycled materials, cutting edge living. Stark, confronting and fabulous. I'm crushing on the staircase and the play of brick against steel reminiscent of a historic half-timbered house. Sawmill House

A collaboration between two brothers, one a sculptor, the other an architect, both with a passion for re-use and recycle. One tonne blocks of waste concrete anchor the building within the site, an old sawmill, and produce a patchwork of colour and texture. At 100sqm the house is not large but a series of moving walls and doors open the inside to the out expanding the visual boundaries of the rooms. Sawmill House by Archier.

Built from recycled materials and designed to accommodate the owners' love of warehouse living the Recycled House in Perth, Western Australia is by Etica Studio. While the design takes its reference from the surrounding art deco buildings the result is contemporary and stylish open plan living with sustainability in mind.
