Mural love

We received an email a couple days ago that without a doubt had to be shared with you all: "I'm Lady, an advertising creative from Manila and an avid reader and fan of your blog. You've featured our cat Kitty Bang Bang once on Monday's Pets on Furniture. For the past year, my boyfriend and I have been constantly inspired by your featured interiors to improve our new home. Having an artist father, I've therefore asked him to paint a mural on our dining room wall, to break the sparseness of the space." Oh, to have an artist for a father! This mural is fantastic!!! Thank you so much for sharing Lady!

In the press

The blog has had a bit of press out there recently that we're really stoked about (ok, particularly me being the Canadian). Today on the Canadian House & Home website a gallery of photos went live that I selected as DTI's favourite interiors. So go check it out here and find out what our 10 favourites are.

Another biggie is a story I was contacted about for the Toronto Star newspaper. The subject was wall murals and I was interviewed by one of their reporters who ended up using a photo of my living room! Check the story out here.

A huge thanks to Lisa at H&H for including us in their blogger galleries and Paola at the Star for including me in her mural story!!

Scott Waterman

Scott Waterman is an artist, a talented decorative painter and I'd like to add an incredible interior designer once I saw photos of his home. His decorative painting began with trompe l'oeil murals and the restoration of historic buildings. Amazing talent (click for larger images)...

His former home in San Francisco was featured in several shelter magazines and was absolutely breathtaking - so serene, romantic, captivating and filled with natural beauty. The creativity in these spaces is fascinating.

Scott has alot of ideas for his house and someday hopes to move his studio out of it, but in the meantime it's fantastic - the white makes his stunning and colourful artwork just come to life. Talk about multi-talented!! Thank you Scott for introducing us to your creative world.

Kim's place...some progress

Like Jo, I have been so busy the last week or so trying to get some work done in my house. There are some exciting things coming up that involve my place and Jo's that we'll tell you about when we can. But in the meantime instead of doing a regular post (since I am lacking in time) I thought I'd post what I've been working on, and purchasing, lately.

For starters, I spent a few hours yesterday (with some help...thanks Jeff!!) putting up a forest mural in my living room. It was painstaking, and worrisome because we ended up with alot of bubbling, but this morning when I went downstairs, I was relieved to find out they pretty much all flattened out once it dried. PHEW. I love the result. It's kind of wacky, and that's my style. The cat on the couch is a pillow I bought on Etsy. Nah, just kidding, that's Jo's favourite cat Lucky.

Now for the office. Last weekend I painted the office floor-to-ceiling white. I finally said buh bye to pale blue walls, and ugly light oak hardwood. The room is SO MUCH BRIGHTER now. It gets alot of sunlight throughout the day, and with everything white, it's just such a nice room to spend time in, as I do...ALOT. My desk was super long, so I cut it down and covered it in some eBay fabric I've had for a while. Jo suggested I paint the door leading to the back deck yellow, and it looks awesome. I have a ton more work to do in there but it's a good start.

I've gone a little nuts lately on eBay and Etsy (and local shops) looking for trinkets and furniture to finish off some rooms with. Today I received 3 parcels, and am waiting for a bunch more. They included the pincushion chair, the resin grapes and the metal tray. The lamp I bought yesterday at a mid-century modern store here, and the table I bought last week at Value Village. It really needs a coat of paint, and I'm not sure what to do with it. I also have 2 chair cushions at an upholsterer so more photos to come hopefully later in the week.

Botanicals

Neece Clark emailed this week with a link to her website. She and Christi Anne Hofland have recently opened a new business, "Bespoke", which specializes in hand-painted pattern and design for walls and surfaces, Fine Art murals, customized wall treatments, and interior colour consultation. Her paintings of blowzy drowsy peonies and romantic roses are so lush you can feel their perfume wafting through the monitor. Petals and leaves crowd canvases. These are a few of my favourites. I'm especially in love with the lotus loo.
