Reader's home - Cassie's quirky apartment

Today's reader's home is that of Cassie Potts, a designer/writer from Coburg, Victoria, Australia. It's quirky, certainly eclectic and very cool. Here's some info from Cassie: I moved into my small one bedroom apartment with my Pugalier ‘Duck’ and Beagle x ‘Seb’ only a few months ago, after returning from 4 years in London. It required a lot of imagination to transform the suburban family home into a distinctive, contemporary space for a young professional (yes, that would be me, I suppose...), which is the growing demographic of this increasingly him Northern suburb. Fortunately, the rooms are large and numerous, and besides exhibiting many quirky design characteristics of the 1950’s, it was still a fairly neutral space which enabled me to make a feature of my collection of eclectic trinkets, artwork and mid-century furniture collected on my travels. My interior design aesthetic for this home is about creating a juxtaposition between the colourful chaos of ‘kitsch’ and a serene sense of minimalism and restraint. A style which this 1950’s house of the Melbourne Northern suburbs perfectly both accommodates and typifies. Even though there is barely an inch of wall or floor not adorned with a brash curios from Mexico or some graffiti-art brought off the street in East London; white walls and shelving help to show-case the bold techni-colour décor whilst not creating a sense of claustrophobia or overwhelming aesthetic-chaos.

Midcentury and modern

An original 1950's post & beam house and a newly designed addition. Midcentury aesthetic married with honesty of materials. A beautiful transition between inside and out. A design that respects the site and the natural vegetation (yes that is a tree wending its way through the room). Privacy and a sense of voyeurism. Steel and wood and glass. It's love on my part. Mid century + pastel

A mid century modern home designed mostly in white accented with of pastel pink, blue and green isn't so typical. And I LOVE that. I found this Melbourne home by interior designers Hecker Guthrie to be so unique and intriguing. The palette is so soothing, the perfect place to come home to after a hard day at work. It's pleasing to the eye and comfortable yet still very modern. How to do white right. And how to use pastels in small doses without becoming shabby chic. It's Rachel Ashwell meets Dwell magazine. :) (Via Urbis magazine. )

Ann Wolf

Ann Wolf is an interior designer based in Texas who is certainly not one dimensional. She has designed a Shaker-inspired farmhouse in Colorado, an Adirondack-style summer house in upstate New York, a mid-century modern in Houston, and a "Hollywood-Glam" pied-a-terre in Manhattan. Whatever the style, her spaces are always elegant yet practical, sophisticated yet whimsical yet. I'm not typically drawn to massive doses of pattern and colour, but she really knows how to mix it up and isn't afraid to be bold with colour combinations. I really admire that.

Mini Moderns

Check out this funky mid-century modern abode in Camberwell, London that was featured in Heart Home, one of my favourite online magazines. It's the home of designers Keith Stephenson and Mark Hampshire of the shop Mini Moderns. It is SO FUN - mid century designed homes always make me smile. The patterns, colours and not-so-serious decor is so appealing. Love this!
