A dark boutique-style retreat in North London

I am so grateful Sue Miller of Mad Cow Interiors contacted me because I am absolutely in love with her dark, eclectic style. Sue is a colour, pattern and texture enthusiast (her home was featured in Abigail Ahern's book Colour) and this is very evident in this North London boutique retreat project. I don't typically lead off a post with a bedroom but in this case it is the icing on the cake. The path was cleared for Mad Cow to collaborate with a specialist to relocate & redesign the kitchen. We added bathrooms you’d want to melt into and created storage solutions without compromising the flow of space. The sunken living room was extended and dug out to create drama out of those awkward Victorian half landings and in keeping with our signature style, every room featured different floor finishes and striking wall treatments. We designed & decorated reclaimed barn wood into bed headboards and had the furniture custom made specifically. On top of all this, we layered curated art & vintage finds selected from various travels and we used photographic prints framed from our own collection of work. The finished result has all the luxury of a boutique hotel but with a characterful homely touch. With its crisp Egyptian Cotton bed linens and towels, its complete range of dinner service, crockery and utilities. Every inch of this home is to die for!! I love it Sue!!!

Tropical, dark and colourful in a British townhouse

Here is another eclectic home by Black Parrots Studio but this time it is mid-century mixed with 70's tropical!!! The theme becomes much more subtle beyond this crazy cool dining room (that plant/leaf wallpaper looks like it has been there for years) but all of the spaces are fun and dramatic whether in bright or dark colours.

NAP Żoliborz - an architect's showroom

On Sunday I featured some work by NAP from Poland. They also sent along photos of their architect's showroom and workspace and I am absolutely blown away buy this space. Dark colours, a mix of vintage and modern, original architecture (original window joinery, doors, jambs, wooden floors and layout of the rooms were preserved in the renovation)...it's a style I always gravitate towards. NAP decided to paint the wood floors and stairs dark, and this led to shades of grey, graphite and peach used throughout. All furnishings and accessories are available through their store - a mix of Vitra, DCW Editions, Gubi, Carl Hansen, Tom Dixon with EMU, Fatboy and Fermob in the garden space.

Dark side

My love for British kitchen designers deVOL is no secret. It's no surprise that I'm smitten by their latest design for this Petersham cottage. Dark, atmospheric, almost other worldly, memorable.

The Grey House

Roger + Chris renovated a 160 year old Italianate Victorian home in Sharon Springs, NY and now call it the Grey House. This might just be one of the best renovations I have ever seen! The exterior is blowing my mind. I love a dark painted house. So dramatic! Also loving that they documented all of the projects on their site with before photos too so I included some so you get the full effect of the work that went into this transformation.
