Loungey sofa

This is another of my posts researched for purely selfish reasons. Seems I am on the market for yet another new sofa. This time I think I (with some help) will make one. I have ALWAYS wanted a low and loungey mattress-type sofa, considering 98% of the time I spend on my sofa I'm sprawled out with my laptop or watching TV. Something super comfy is just what I need. My fifties vintage turquoise sofa is not jiving at all with the new kitchen, and it's not big enough for 2 to cuddle on. I found quite a few examples of lounge sofas in my photo stash and I'm hoping in the near future I will be the proud owner of one.

Something about a couch and an alcove

The latest reader's request comes from Ksenia, a fellow Canadian, who emailed us this: "I am trying to help a friend who is dealing with a tricky design problem in her living room. She wants to put a couch in the "nook" or alcove of her living room, then put wall cabinets above the couch along the width of the alcove. The couch would mostly fit the width of the alcove. Do you have any images to share that would show a couch that just fits in an alcove? Or seating in an alcove with wall cabinets above?" This was a bit of a tough request but after some hunting, I found a few that hopefully will provide some inspiration for what to do with a couch in an alcove.

Men and their leather couches

Michele wrote in the other day looking for a bit of help: "After much negotiation (and compromise on my part) my husband got the leather couch of his dreams, but I am finding it hard to find inspiration on the web for how to decorate around a dark leather couch in order to make the room look fresh and light as opposed to looking like a men's club or cigar lounge. Perhaps I am asking for too much. I noticed you don't have a "Leather" category so I was wondering if I could give you a nudge because I could really use the help!". Here is a photo Michele sent in which I was pretty relieved to see because at least the couch has clean lines.

I went through my photo stash and came up with some dark leather (and fabric) couches in living rooms that hopefully can provide inspiration to Michele and anyone else out there who was convinced by their significant other to jump on the leather couch bandwagon. I'm seeing a spicy colour on the wall behind the sofa, with jewel toned pillows, a beige with brown spotted cowhide rug and a mid-brown (teakish) wood coffee table, or glass. It's not as difficult as you may think.

Jo-anne's vintage couch

A little while ago I posted photos of vintage couches I found on Flickr. Jo-anne in Vancouver commented that she has a vintage houndstooth couch and was curious as to it's age and origin. I adore houndstooth so I was so pleased that she sent photos and this info about it: She weighs 5 tons, or at least my movers thought she did after bringing her up the 3 flights of very steep stairs into my attic apartment. I’m darn curious what the cushions are stuffed with but kind of scared to find out. She’s also getting lumpy and her bottom is saggy but she’s a darling :o) Found her for $50 at an antique shop near my old place. The owner wanted her out of the way for antiquey things and I was in the market for something after throwing my recently ex-partner’s p.o.s. couch onto a heap at the dump! She's little but so is my apartment – a perfect fit! My guess is the 50s...any light you can shed would be lovely. If anyone knows anything about her fabulous couch please leave a comment.
