Metal studded concrete, marble, the bling of polished brass. A touch of velvet, the caress of leather, the luxury of light. A contemporary home at Torquay on the surf coast of Victoria by Auhaus Architecture.
The Concrete House by Matt Gibson Architecture + Design is a stunning modern masterpiece that may be made of concrete but is far from cold and harsh (the cozy furnishings sure do help). Composed of 2 longitudinal zones located to north & south of an east west spine - living spaces to the north and sleeping/utility spaces to the south, Concrete House utilises vertical connections and void spaces to provide strong visual connections between levels. Formally simple, lofty and airy, the main spaces are reminiscent of mid century modernist material and compositional qualities (particularly Brazilian modernism). The client, a builder and specialist in masonry was keen to utilise a concrete and stone palette externally. These materials along with a generous utilisation of naturally finished timber became the determining elements of both the houses’ architecture and interior. These provide a series of haptic textures that effect a powerful contrast against the smooth and more polished nature of glass and steel. Photos: Derek Swalwell
Part concrete brutalism, part metallic industrial, part Scandinavian modern and topped up with a healthy dose of breeze block love. I'm crushing on the contemporary hotel style of the Boro New York on Long Island. It's a celebration of the simple "guts" of the building, elevating the cinder block from humble to hot.
Built by a builder for his young family, this Balwyn, Melbourne home is the latest project from interior designer Fiona Lynch.
"A minimal approach to materials has created an interior which is reflective and relaxing in feel. Concrete, timber and stone are the main materials in this project. Aged brass and grey stained oak cabinetry compliment the minimal approach to materials."
Sophisticated, restrained, always with an eye to detail Lynch's design is beautifully resolved.
It's Wednesday. Hump day. Time for a virtual getaway to the Ardennes region of Belgium, to La Micheline, an old railway station now a holiday home set amongst meadows. If the impressive renovation and rebuild using bluestone, rough hewn wood and concrete isn't enough to get your design juices running there's even an old railway line with trolleys. The gîte is the creation of architectural photographers Anne and Jean-Luc Laloux and is a sister property to La Classe which we featured here.
