Clock House

A sad and sorry 1960s mid-terrace building in Finsbury Park, London has had new life breathed into it by architectural studio Archmongers. By knocking through the internal walls and creating a glass and timber extension the ground floor layout is more connected and so much brighter. I love the use of glass bricks, terrazzo, tiles, rubber and plywood, even the quirky "brain-coloured" tile and clock on the facade. Tired and dated is now energetic and creative.

A converted nuns' residence in New York

What would you do with 6,200 square feet of living space in Brooklyn Heights, NY? Interior designer Britt Zunino and architect husband Damian of Studio DB turned what was once the 1830's home to the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor into their new sweet digs for themselves and their 4 children. Lots of modern touches and spaciousness I can only dream of, and a fireplace (original?) in the living room that I almost passed out over when I saw it. Working on a Saturday

First stalking of the year

I love when the real estate market starts to heat up after the holiday break. More houses listed and a greater chance of hitting the design jackpot. If you are a regular reader you will know I have a thing for older houses in inner city suburbs and if they have an architect designed modern extension out back then even better. I'm stalking in Paddington, Sydney and I think it might be love. Exposed old brick, glass transition between heritage and new, slick open-plan living areas with a great connection between in and out. There's even a car lift and I don't know why that excites me but it does. With Sydney house prices we'll never afford it but it's all about the stalking and the gawking. Link here while it lasts.
