Sunshine on the water

Another stunning home from the Luxe Houses stable. Stylish, light filled rooms overlooking the Pittwater at Palm Beach. (I recognise this beautiful home as the work of interior designer Justine Hugh-Jones.) Dream holidays are made of this. Friends, family, fabulous house and sunshine sparkling on the water. More about Iluka Villa here.

Hump day holiday - part 1

It's Wednesday, hump day, the working week half done but still the promise of the weekend is just out of reach. If we can't escape our everyday humdrum then perhaps we can take a virtual getaway to this simple but oh so stylish holiday home in the sleepy waterside hamlet of Patonga, north of Sydney. Nothing to do but sit back and relax, perhaps a dip in the river followed by a drink on the verandah. It's about wet swimmers and tyre swings, old boats and the hum of summer insects, good books and good friends. Nothing precious except the memories and the objects d'art strewn about. The dream can be real though. Noojee is available for holiday let via Contemporary Hotels.

Stalking waterside leftovers

Call me fussy. Call me picky. I have a problem. (Well quite a few if truth be told.) I real estate stalk for the prefect property but rarely find it. I do find lots of leftovers. Not quite right, love the bones but ditch the furniture, bad photos, I need more photos please! Can't quite put my finger on it listings with something that has me nodding "yes". This week I've taken a liking to waterside property. Beachside, harbourside, water views, from shack to mansion including one of Australia's most spectacular and unusual homes in the middle of nowhere. Click on the photos to go to the listings. When your life is frantic, when the world is pawing at you over and over and over, when you want to stop the bus and just get off remember there are oases of calm out there. Little islands of simple beauty. This is one of them. Bookmark it and open it up when you need a visual pick-me-up. Sag Harbor by Steven Gambrel.

In the dunes

It must be the scorching hot days that are plaguing my part of the world that has me obsessing over beach houses. Normally I'd be happy with a simple shack with a view and a breeze. That is until I see something just a bit more special.

On a rolling site overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this beach house brings together two contrasting ideas – nineteenth century Shingle Style design, and a contemporary preference for material and textural expression over architectural detail. While the exterior captures the local design aesthetic, the interior treats light, space and surface in a distinctly modern fashion.

Compound in the Dunes by Ike Kligerman Barkley.
