Andrew Maynard

"Recently named in Wallpaper Magazine's Architects Directory, an "annual guide to the world's most innovative practices", Andrew Maynard's design practice is quickly becoming recognised as an emerging source of interest in the design community. Since Andrew Maynard Architects was established in late 2002 it has been recognised internationally in media, awards and exhibitions for its unique body of built work and its experimental conceptual design polemics." His work has been described as floaty concepts and dirty reality. Take a long hard look at the inspiring details of these spaces. The wall in the bathroom that raises and brings the outside in. The stainglass Mondrian walls and tiled bathroom. The use of linoleum to clad walls in a budget bathroom. The plywood kitchen.

Modern in BrisVegas

I live in Brisbane fondly known by the locals as BrisVegas. I'm on the hunt for a new house. Here's one in Taringa that got away.

Boyd Baker House

Things are a little chaotic at home at the moment so I thought I'd take another virtual holiday, this time to Bacchus Marsh in Victoria, Australia. Boyd Baker House, a post war modernist masterpiece is just outside Melbourne. The stone structure is filled with mid century classics and stands on the property with sister house, the Boyd Dower House and a stone library. Designed in 1964 by architect Robin Boyd it is an Australian architectural icon in an iconic bush setting. Both the Baker house and the newer Dower houses are available to stay. Now that the weather is cooler here in Australia It's the perfect bush holiday. This is my idea of camping!

Serene

A simple 1960's apartment with modest sized rooms and low ceilings. Normally nothing to get excited about unless renovated by Melbourne's Nexus Design. Serene, sophisticated, filled with classic furniture, an enviable Australian Impressionist art collection and a referential colour palette. Small scale living on a large scale style. Inspiring. See the original post on Nexus Designs here.

Welcome to Greg's home!

Hi Jo,
This is my own apartment where I live. I wanted to show you this because it shows our versatility as designers. We are known for doing spaces with print and colour so this space shows another look, its dark, moody and sexy. With my own space I wanted to express a very personal response which makes this space original as only I own these experiences. I hope you know what I mean. I drew on my Italian/Australian background, basically I was pushing “wog chic"! The baroque chair is from the family home and the chandelier and bed head are pieces that I saw in my uncles houses in the 80s. At the time I thought they where the height of utter revoltingness but now appreciate their beauty and kitschness. I love the irony of turning something that I thought was ugly into some beautiful. This adds another dimension to a room. I wanted this space to be a place where I came home at the end of the day and feel fantastic and when I go to bed to FEEL LIKE Joan Collins snuggling up in my fur bedspread. We all work hard and we deserve to feel extraordinary. Anyway I hope you like this project, there is more to come!
