Not only do they look great but they help control temperature and light within the house. What am I talking about? Why the screens that clad this reworked extension to a heritage house in Melbourne by Wolveridge Architects.A contemporary extension with heritage overlays. It's what Australian architects excel at.
A new extension hidden from the street. Contemporary meets heritage. Walls of glass versus walls of Federation red brick. Inside and out merge while light and cool breezes cross thresholds of sliding glass. Travertine floors and timber slat ceilings. Serene and introspective, the perfect urban oasis. Beachside, bespoke and beautiful. What more could you want? With its stunning views and fine old bones this Palm Beach, Sydney renovation by Alexander & Co saw the layout overhauled with an emphasis on indoor/outdoor living, handmade elements and simple, natural yet luxurious materials.
Shaped almost like a child's drawing of a house these two pavilions have been positioned to take advantage of the views and the sunlight, providing that all important connection between inside and out. The buildings may be clean lined and minimal in their shape but the interiors are warm and welcoming, overflowing with bright light and I'm guessing cooling breezes when they arise. It may have been only existed as an installation for the Lodz Design Festival earlier this month but how amazing would it be if this hauntingly beautiful old house could retain its modern trappings, even better if I could live there. A fantastical world of peeling ceilings and tattered wallpaper as backdrop to cutting edge furniture, striking art and a jungle of indoor plants.
