The folks at Klopf Architecture sent over some of their projects and this one immediately caught my eye. This is a dream home for a collector or avid bookworm - the amount of shelving is amazing! (I'd have to hire someone to come and do the dusting though). Here's a bit of info on this fantastic, net-zero energy home: The owners de-constructed their existing house when they realized that any single-story design meeting their needs would completely eliminate their back yard. They directed Klopf Architecture to design a net-zero energy, two-level home to be a contemporary interpretation of Eichler in style yet keep their single story neighborhood happy. The site, a cul-de-sac lot which was the not large enough for a single-story home that would fit the needs of these owners who both work from home. They wanted this to be their “final” residence so Klopf needed to design a larger-than-normal home to suit their lifestyle needs. Instead of adding a second story (and annoying the neighbors) they opted for a partially-submerged lower level that Klopf designed furthest from a basement as possible (with a pulled-back floor plate, a light-filled “atrium” and a lower level light well).
Before I get started on today's pets on furniture, I wanted to share this photo of my stray cat Agnes I rescued last week. This was taken about 15 minutes after I brought her to her new home. She wandered around the apartment sniffing every nook and cranny, then hopped on the bed and decided to have a nap. I am so happy she didn't have to spend any more time cooped up in my bathroom and her new owner Jasmine is going to take really good care of, including getting all the surgeries done on her she needs ASAP, which will likely cost around $1200. I have donated all I can and I have received a few donations from some very kind folks (thank you all!!!) but it barely covers the surgeries so if you are able to make a donation I would be SOOOO grateful - Jasmine (who works for a non-profit org) was so kind to take this cat in I feel terrible that Agnes comes with such a hefty bill. 2013 was a long year, no less because i spent it without a dog. your weekly pet posts perked up my spirits regularly; so in return i offer a photo of my recent rescue, didot. she much prefers any recently vacated place on furniture that is still warm [despite not being allowed on furniture, or that i have made her 3 dog beds of her own]. this particular spot happens to be a trusty ikea karlstad with DIY pillows and a wall hanging i made out of recycled t-shirts and the like.

Flinders Lane Melbourne. You can't get any closer to the heart of city. Only 75 metres square this clever apartment is stylish and hip. Plywood is used for the fitout with a storage cube providing a now you see it now you don't parents' sleeping nook and the baby's room. Flinders Lane Apartment by Clare Cousins. Contemporary architecture, historic building, dynamic laneway. A perfect marriage. The icing on the cake? It's listed on airbnb.
Renovations at my new old house having ground to a shuddering halt for more than a year are once more on the horizon. We desperately need an upstairs bathroom. It is a long trudge to our one and only bathroom waaaay down the back of the house at two in the morning. I need, I want a new bathroom close at hand. Now is the time to start gathering inspiration and doodling plans and looking for fixtures and fittings and finishes. My house was built in the 1860s so I'm leaning towards a more traditional look but with a touch of boho or maybe a dash of modern minimalism or ... well I'll know what I want when I see it. I would love a tub for soaking and an open shower. A wet room? A modern basin on an old table? What colour? All gleaming white? A hint of dark drama? Warm wood? Here are a few images I have tucked away in my inspiration files.
